Trust Refurbishes Shore Cottage

The Trust owned, Shore cottage has been relaunched to offer a much improved facility for holiday accommodation.

The traditional stone holiday cottage offers visitors the enjoyment of comfortable, modern holiday accommodation within the shelter of the gardens, but less than 100 yards from the beach - so close, you can hear the waves from your bedroom! This charming semi-detached cottage is situated on the edge of the original walled garden of Galloway House and retains many period features. It has recently been refurbished to high standard in an airy, comfortable style with a subtle mixture of Scottish, seaside and garden cottage themed rooms. Beachcombers will love this location as will writers and painters, nature and garden visitors, activity seekers or honeymooners. Shore Cottage is an ideal base for enjoying all that the Solway Coast has to offer and is now available for holiday bookings.

The cottage Sleeps up to 4* guests (2 +2) • children and dogs welcome • beach  • wood burning stove.

The cottage is being managed on behalf of the Trust by Escape to Galloway holiday lettings, so please feel free to log on to their web site for further information and reservations.

One of the most prominent remaining Mulberry Harbour structures situated on the Trust property above the high water mark at Rigg Bay has now been designated by Historic Scotland as a National Monument. (February 2011).

The stone plinth was constructed during World War II as part of the preparations for the D-Day landings. Its purpose was to act as an anchor point for the floating pontoons that were being tested off Rigg Bay by the War Office at the time. It is situated on the high water mark and can be clearly seen from the shore. It is now the only permanently visible* remains of the Mulberry Harbour left at Rigg Bay since the collapse of the "Hippo" in 2007 (About us). We are delighted with the scheduling as it recognises the importance of the role that the locality played during a crucial part of our national history and as it stands as a memorial to all those who served and fought on D-Day and to the huge contribution it made to the success of the operation.

Sleeps up to 4* guests (2 +2) • children and dogs welcome • beach  • wood burning stove.

*Please note update on Visitor Information Page regarding wreckage of sections of the Mulberry Harbour exposed on the sands on Rigg Bay.

Two out of the three handerkerchief trees planted in the last ten years in the grounds have blossomed this spring (May 2011) - all are thriving, but the third is yet to produce any flowers.

We hosted another wedding reception in May this year, that proved a great success. An additional temporary parking area adjacent to the walled improved access and convenience for the occassion and although we intend to grass the area over, the hardstanding will remain useful for any future events.

Our upgraded web site was launched in March 2010 in conjunction with a new leaflet in an effort to market the Gardens more effectively, essentially to attract and interest more visitors both from the local community and those on holidaying or touring in the area. The web site is also designed and intended to raise the profile of the Gardens, not only at a local and regional level but to hopefully appeal to a wider audience from further afield to raise awareness, create a greater interest and demonstrate that the gardens and indeed The Machars as a whole, is a place and an area well worth visiting and returning.

In addition to this we wish to provide a much more detailed, open and informative forum to share our history, our aims and aspirations and of course post regular updates to chart our general activities, news and events. Also, to explain and improve understanding of any current or future plans for the gardens, woodlands and shore.

It is the Trustees absolute intention to ensure that visitors continue to enjoy access to these historic, beautiful, yet informal grounds. We endevour to continue our programme of complimentary new plantings and introductions, improve the standard of the current facilities and install those that we might lack. All this with the aim and intention of providing a more attractive, useful venue that may be better utilised by the community and offer increased opportunity for a wider range of activities.

If you would like to consider using an area of the gardens to host a private or community event or activity, please contact us to discuss your requirements.

The Trustees continue to take measures towards improving the gardens and recognise the need to explore as many avenues and opportunities as possible in an effort to successfully tackle the challenges that increasingly face us. Accordingly, the restoration and development of the garden is actioned at a rate that we can realistically achieve and that funds will allow.
