Visitor Information

We would like to offer some informal advice for your general guidance during your visit to the gardens and shore to protect and maintain the grounds for everyone’s current & continued enjoyment.

Some areas, in particular the grass walks, may be closed off from time to time especially during or after adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain to keep pedestrian damage to a minimum so please observe the prevailing conditions and or notices and act accordingly.

Bicycles must be kept on the hard road/paths and kept off all grassed areas at all times.

Visitors are advised to keep out of the grounds during high winds in the interests of safety.

Dogs are welcome, but on leads and under control - Dog excrement should be cleared off paths and areas of mown lawn in the interests of cleanliness & other visitor’s enjoyment.

No unauthorised vehicles are permitted within the grounds and there is no vehicular access to the shore. All visitors’ vehicles, must be left in the car park and left at the owner’s risk. Riding or exercising horses (on the shore only) is welcomed but only with prior permission. Camping or lighting fires anywhere in the grounds or shore is not permitted, unless with prior permission.

If you are disabled and require further assistance, please contact the Head Gardener for advice and guidance for parking and general access. Click here for contact information.

Visitors, particularly those with children, using the shore are asked to make themselves aware of tidal times and heed changing weather conditions. The shore is a natural environment and may contain hidden dangers so please respect the nature of the surroundings and play it safe at all times. Numerous and various items are washed in with the tide, some possibly hazardous – if in doubt, please do not handle any suspect objects.

Launching or mooring boats between the high and low water marks is strictly by prior arrangement with the landowner.

Parking charges are indicated at the meter in the car park. Any additional donations are welcome. All contributions go directly towards the upkeep of the Gardens. Season tickets are encouraged for regular visitors. During busier periods overspill car parking is available on the right hand side of the access road to the gardens – others areas may be allocated as necessary and will signposted accordingly. In the event overspill parking applies, please park responsibly and don’t block gate ways or other visitor’s vehicles. Parking charges still apply in all cases.

Galloway House and Garlieston House are privately owned. These properties are not open to the public and all visitors are asked to respect the individual owner’s privacy.

Please help protect the natural environment keep the gardens & shore tidy and dispose of any litter responsibly.

April 2010 Update. Warning to Visitors. Due to (we assume) variations and shifts in the tidal patterns, some sections of wreckage from the WW2 Mulberry Harbour activities have been partially exposed on the sands just above the low tide mark at Rigg Bay for the first time. Please be aware that the various objects are sharp and rusty and many difficult to see as they remain partially buried. Vigilance is required as these items may pose a danger to walkers and or swimmers. Parents should keep children away from them. Dogs and Horses are at also at risk so again please keep them under control and away from the affected areas. We have reported the situation to the coastguard and are in discussions with the MOD in effort to find a solution to the problem. We will monitor the situation closely and report as events progress.

Thank you for taking the time to read this notice and we hope you really enjoy your visit and are encouraged to return.
